You begin and end your Magic Kingdom visit on Main Street, which opens a half hour before, and closes a half hour to an hour after, the rest of the park. The Walt Disney World Railroad stops at the Main Street Station; board here for a grand tour of the park or a ride to Frontierland or Mickey's Toontown Fair.
Main Street is a sanitized Disney re-creation of a turn-of-the-19th-century, small-town American street. Its buildings are real, not elaborate props. Attention to detail is exceptional: all interiors, furnishings, and fixtures are true to period. Along the street are shops and eating places, City Hall, and a fire station. Occasionally, horse-drawn trolleys, fire engines, and horseless carriages transport visitors along Main Street to the central hub.
Most of the buildings running along Main Street are shops of one kind or another. Many visitors don’t know, however, that virtually all of the shops and stores are connected, and it’s possible to walk almost from one end of Main Street to the other indoors. This is especially useful during parades and inclement weather.
Even though most of the buildings on Main Street are shops, a few offer the opportunity to watch the items being made before they’re sold. An actual glassblower, for example, blows and forms decorative glass objects in the glass store, and other artists make glass sculpture. In the candy shop, you can watch bakers and confectionaries create a new batch of sweets every few minutes.
